The Activities of "Severance" during the Korean War




Abstract
On November 25, 2003, an interview on the subject of The Activities of "Severance" during the Korean War was held at Lee Samyeol¢¥ s office. The participants included Lee Samyeol, the 48th graduation class of Severance Medical University, and Hwang Jongseop, the X-ray technician of Severance Hospital. At the meeting, two interviewees recollected the "Severance"¢¥ s variations and activities caused by the Korean War. After the Korean War broke out, "Severance" moved Ito Geoje-do, Gyeonsangnam-do, in 1951. Building a "refugee" hospital in that island., "Severance" gave much effort to cure refugees. Until very recently, the residents in Geoje-do remembered and appreciated the medical services rendered by "Severance". In addition to Geoje-do, "Severance" during the Korean War established two more hospitals for curing civilian, soldiers and refugees; Cheorngdo, Gyeongsangnam-do and Wonju, Gangwon-do. Having suffered severe damage during the war, "Severance" was forced to relocate to another location Sinchon, where Yonsei University College of Medicine is presently located.
